Newspapers Alive: A Modern Approach to A Traditional Marketing Medium

For the past 5 years or so, I have made a nice little second income doing internet marketing in my spare time. Part of the fun for me was trying to find affiliate products that I thought would be helpful to others, and which could also make me a little bit of money in the process. I did well and enjoyed it, but things started to change recently.

 
While I still enjoyed the searching for products part of what I did, I started to grow tired of the marketing side of things. Part of the problem for me was that I had invested in a few “can’t miss” marketing systems that did more than just miss, they cut into my profits. These losses dampened my enthusiasm a bit, so you can imagine that I was not too excited when I heard about a new program called Newspapers Alive.

 
I had been talking to a few of my friends in one of the more popular affiliate marketing forums, explaining that I was considering taking a break due to my recent lack of success. It was one of those friends who clued me into Newspapers Alive, telling me that it was unlike anything that they had seen before, and how their early results using the program were very encouraging. I was still a little wary, even though the recommendation was coming from a trusted source, but my friend said that I should give it a go, even offering to pay for my first month in NPA. With that kind of offer on the table, how could I refuse?

 
I’ll admit that it was the offer of a freebie that lured me in, but what really won me over was the way in which NPA works, which is something that I will go into in more detail a little later in this review. Essentially, what I was looking at was a new approach to a tried and true marketing medium: newspaper ads. I had considered going that route to promote some of my links when I first got started with affiliate marketing, but I found the cost of placing ads in newspapers was a little outside my budget. I wasn’t even sure that people still even read the paper, but I was about to be pleasantly surprised.

 
Before I get to how all of this works, let me start by saying that I had a healthy dose of skepticism in play on the day that I signed up. Yes, I liked the premise, but I’m still not entirely sure that I would have bought in if my first month fees had not been paid by a friend.
Now, let’s take a look at how Newspapers Alive delivers the goods.

 
The Newspapers Alive Set-Up Process:

When you arrive at the Newspapers Alive main page, the first thing that you will see is that there are three different traffic packages to choose from. My friend had offered to pay for Package 1, which claims to deliver 200-250 visitors to your website on a daily basis. All the visitors arrive at your site via ads that NPA places in newspapers across the country using a rather ingenious little method. It would be a logistical nightmare to place links for every single NPA member, which is why they use a single link that goes to a random member page. Once the visitor arrives on that page, they have the choice to click through to your offer.

The newspapers are spread across 10 different zones in the United States, and you need to choose which 3 of those zones you want to have covered. You can change these zones at any time, but I suggest waiting for a week’s worth of results before changing.

 
Perhaps the most important step in the entire process is the creation of your personalized offer page, which is where visitors will land when following the URL in the newspaper ads.

Newspapers Alive supply plenty of helpful tools to create a great page that sells, but you can still get results by keeping it simple and delivering a call to action that is hard to ignore. I like to get a little bit creative when creating splash pages and such, but still found that the tutorial videos offered up by NPA were really helpful. This little feature will be especially pleasing to those of you who have a harder time with the creative side of things.

 
With sign-up and set-up complete, it became a waiting game to see if my page was going to get any kind of love. I went with a relatively inexpensive Clickbank product to market, whilst also choosing the zones that were in my surrounding states. I have always had success with people in this region, as I think I have a good idea of their specific needs, as well as being able to “talk” in a way that will appeal to them. The product that I chose had a couple of options: you could buy an eBook for $15 and leave it at that, or you could purchase the book and then sign up for an online monthly membership site that offered even more. I liked this product because it gave me a couple of different ways to earn.

 
The visitors started to arrive very quickly, and I soon picked up a couple of sales, although no upgrades to site membership. What I loved about this part of the program was the detailed stats that came with it. I could clearly see where visitors were coming from, helping me establish which zones were delivering, and which might need to be switched out. The results were solid across the board, so I decided to stick with my 3 original zones beyond the first week.

 
The results became a good deal clearer in the second week, as one of the zones started to fall off the pace quite dramatically. I changed things up before the end of that week and started to see more balanced results. By the end of that week, I still hadn’t seen an upgrade, but had earned enough to make back the $60 cost of the package, which was all profit given that my membership was paid for by someone else.

 
I spent the final 2 weeks of the first month changing up the zones and toying with the wording of my personalized page. I tried to focus more on the benefits of upgrading to the monthly membership site, as it was obvious that the eBook was doing well on its own and without any real input from me. That move helped, as I ended up with a pair of upgrades, and a request from a couple of folks looking for a little more information about what they would get by joining the site. I am confident that at least one of them will make the move.

As the end of my first month approached, I realized I had a decision to make, which was whether to stay or go. If I was to stay, I also had to decide whether it might be a good idea to move up to Package 2 or 3, both of which were pricier, but which offered a much larger number of visitors. I ultimately have decided to keep going with Package 1, but that does not mean that I would say that you should totally avoid the other two options. Given that I market online on a part-time basis, I am more than happy with the results and profit that I made during the first month. Should my ROI dramatically improve, I might then consider moving up to the next package.

 
In the coming months, assuming I stay on beyond month number 2, I plan on cycling out different products based on how people reacted to other items in the individual zones. I am going to try and figure out which products are in demand, and specifically where. I feel that this is a great way to get the most out of the NPA program, and I am more than happy to keep tweaking what I do in order to get the best results. The friend who introduced me to NPA writes great copy, but is a little lacking on the creative side of things, and I believe we are going to collaborate to put together better personalized pages. We don’t compete with the types of products that we promote, so I believe this collaboration would be mutually beneficial.

 
My monthly budget for marketing comes in at $100, which I’m sure is a good deal less than a lot of you, but it suits what I do perfectly, and also ensures that I always make a profit. The $60 membership for Newspapers Alive is a good chunk of that budget, but the positive results have allowed me to dump some programs that were not delivering the ROI I had hoped for. I am pleasantly surprised with what NPA has delivered, and I hope it does the same for you.
